Temeraire is a Celestial dragon, the most highly-prized of all draconic breeds famed for their intelligence, agility and most of all for the Divine Wind – their terrible roar capable of shattering the heavy timbers of war ships, shattering woodland and destroying other dragons mid-flight. History takes flight in the second book of Naomi Novik’s deliciously addictive series which captures the Napoleonic period perfectly and skillfully layers the timeline with imagination by adding a Dragon Air Force to the battle for England.Ĭaptain William Laurence of the British Air Corps and his dragon, Temeraire, begin their slow voyage to China, fearful that upon landing they will be forced to part by Imperial decree.

I read the second book in the series ONE GOOD TURN and was still really impressed, but for some odd reason, I never got around to reading the third book WHEN WILL THERE BE GOOD NEWS? So when Kathy and I were debating about what book we wanted to read for the first Reagan Arthur Books Challenge read-along, I knew my vote was for the fourth book in the series STARTED EARLY, TOOK MY DOG. I absolutely loved it and was pleasantly surprised by not only the mystery, but the literary quality of the book as well. Reagan ArthurĪ few years ago, my book club read the first novel in the Jackson Brodie series called CASE HISTORIES by Kate Atkinson. Dog in tow, Jackson is about to learn, along with Tracy, that no good deed goes unpunished. Meanwhile, Jackson Brodie, the beloved detective of novels such as Case Histories, is embarking on a different sort of rescue-that of an abused dog. Suddenly burdened with a small child, Tracy soon learns her parental inexperience is actually the least of her problems, as much larger ones loom for her and her young charge. Both appear miserable and better off without each other-or so decides Tracy, in a snap decision that surprises herself as much as Kelly. Summary: Tracy Waterhouse leads a quiet, ordered life as a retired police detective-a life that takes a surprising turn when she encounters Kelly Cross, a habitual offender, dragging a young child through town. Then, in the late 1980s, she experienced an unexpected awakening and began a journey toward a feminine spirituality. ”-Sue Monk Kiddįor years, Sue Monk Kidd was a conventionally religious woman. Colonel Harris died from shotgun blast while riding his horse that morning. Rutledge’s first case is the murder of Colonel Harris of Upper Streetham. He has been released from the hospital and allowed to return to work, but he hasn’t told anyone that he’s been hearing the voice of a soldier he executed for insubordination mocking him in his head. Inspector Ian Rutledge of Scotland Yard is back on the beat following his tour of duty during World War I. Then I remember that they can’t even add an Interlibrary Loan Request button to their website and I stop worrying.) So, phone in hand (to check on Goodreads for the first book in the series), I picked up A Test of Wills because I wanted to start a new mystery series. (Y’know, the more I bash the Yarmouth library on here, the more I wonder if they’re ever going to stumble onto this blog and learn how much they disappoint me. The Ian Rutledge series is one of the few series that the Yarmouth library owns in its entirety, it feels like. After the high crazypants babytown frolics of The Tea Rose, I reverted to form and neglected to take great notes for the next book I read, A Test of Wills. Perfect for the very young, and for any parent hoping for a breather. The answer turns out to be a pleasant surprise - one that doubles their number on the windowsill, and leaves them all “waiting to see what would happen next.” And when a cat with patches joins them, they all wonder what she’s waiting for. A rainbow is pleasing lightning not so much (Henkes works wonders with their eyes in this case). Sometimes they sleep (there they all are, stretched out on the sill, the rabbit’s body draped over the edge), “but mostly they waited.” They see many interesting things, including cloud shapes to which they can relate. Five friends sit happily on a windowsill, waiting for something amazing to happen. They are distinct individuals, and when they find what they’re waiting for, they’re happy. An owl, a puppy, a bear, a rabbit, and a pig wait for marvelous things to happen in this irresistible and resonant picture book by the New York Timesbestselling and Caldecott Medalist Kevin Henkes. Using brown ink, watercolour paint and coloured pencils, Henkes gives us five figurines on a windowsill, all of them waiting for something: an owl, waiting for the moon a pig with an umbrella, waiting for rain a bear with a kite, waiting for the wind a puppy on a sled, waiting for snow and a rabbit with an accordion-shaped body, just looking out the window and waiting - for nothing in particular. While it continues in the gentle vein of Kitten’s First Full Moon, it has (to my eyes, at least) much more to offer - colour, for one thing, even if it is in soft pastel shades.
